Schuylkill Headwaters Association is excited to announce that the application for the 2017 Schuylkill Acts & Impacts watershed expedition is now available!
The trip will be held from June 17-24, 2017. Current high school students from Schuylkill, Berks, Montgomery, Chester and Philadelphia counties are eligible to apply (including graduating seniors of 2017). More information about the trip can be found within the application packet.

SECOND ANNUAL PINTS FOR PEDS IS JAN 29
DANVILLE – The second annual Pints for Peds event to benefit Children’s Miracle Network at Geisinger will be held from 5 to 10 p.m., Jan. 29 at Old Forge Brewing Company, 298 Mill St.
The event will include beer tasting along with a buffet dinner and a silent auction. Participants can enjoy great food and handcrafted beers brewed on site.
The cost is $60 per person. Space is limited, so attendees should reserve their place online at go.geisinger.or/cmnevents or by calling 800-322-5437.
Pints for Peds sponsors include White & Williams LLP, United States Gypsum, First Columbia Bank & Trust Co. and St. Francis Home Association.

 Join SACF in Celebrating 50 Years of Charitable Giving
January marks the start of Schuylkill Area Community Foundation’s (SACF) 50th Anniversary Celebration. We are truly grateful for the opportunity to support the charitable work of our wonderful donors who serve so many people throughout Schuylkill County. Since 1967, it is you – our fund holders, donors, professional advisors, and community partners – who are the greatest measure of our success!
In honor of this significant milestone in the history of the Community Foundation, we are launching a program to raise $50,000 to increase our grantmaking capacity to support the nonprofit organizations in Schuylkill County. You are invited to join the Circles of Giving by making a contribution to the Golden Circle or Community Circle! Every dollar will directly impact programs or projects submitted through the Foundation’s grant cycle which opens on January 1 and concludes March 15. The grant process, eligibility, and application are available at www.sacfoundation.com.
“The program has two levels – the Golden Circle is a giving level of $1,000 and above; the Community Circle is a giving level of $5 up to $999. Every dollar makes an impact within this program,” said Eileen Kuperavage, Executive Director. “At this time, $27,000 has been pledged to kick off the Circle of Giving, and with your donation we will reach our goal to provide greater funding opportunities for the nonprofit community this year as we celebrate 50 years of charitable giving.” The Golden Circle donors are listed in the order the pledge has been received, and will be updated as additional donors contact the office: Sonric Associates, Herman Yudacufski Charitable Foundation, Dunkin Donuts, Mrs. T’s, PPL Foundation, Branch Banking & Trust Company (BB&T), M & T Charitable Foundation, and Mr. & Mrs. Richard Purcell.

It’s that time of year when we gather to celebrate the Greater Pottsville Winter Carnival. This year’s theme is 50 years of Community Spirit and the recipient of the Billie Payne Scholarship is Rachel Cataldo. She was crowned the 2016 Snowflake Princess and the scholarship of $1,000 is for her college education at Susquehanna University. Rachel will be pursuing a major in communications with an emphasis in broadcasting and sports media.
For 50 years, Winter Carnival has a strong tradition in leadership and Mrs. Payne exemplified this trait. Your challenge is to lead by Mrs. Payne’s example of integrity, dedication, humility, fairness and sense of humor. A challenge to inspire others to make this county a better place.
Billie Payne is certainly in our hearts as we look forward to crowning the 2017 Snowflake Princess and her court.

Groundhog Day at Sweet Arrow Lake County Park
Grover the Groundhog is still cozy and snoozing in his burrow but will emerge to be with us at Sweet Arrow Lake County Park on T hursday, February 2, 2017 to make his weather prediction. Breakfast will be available beginning at 7:30 a.m. (Breakfast will be cancelled if there is a blizzard.) Following Grover’s prediction at 9:00 a.m. entertainment by Matthew Dodd will include stories and songs. Also enjoy a Chinese “Groundhog” Auction.  On the second Tuesday of each month, the Storytime program for children ages 4-7 is held at the library at 6PM. The program features stories, a craft project, and other activities designed to prepare children for kindergarten or reinforce basic skills already being learned in school.
Within the next few weeks, we will be receiving a large assortment of materials to support our new PlayK initiative. These interesting collections of themed books and toys which assist in preparing children to enter the school environment can be used by staff in formal programming situations, or by parents of children who do not have the opportunity to attend a pre-school or daycare. Interested families should stop by the library for more information or call 570-874-3382.
