image Multiple Lehighton homes without power until fire-damaged building is razed

img_1359Multiple homes in Lehighton remain without power following an apartment building fire today at 256 North Second Street. Power is expected to be restored after the structure is torn down early tomorrow. Due to the proximity to the building, workers won’t be able to do repairs to the power lines until daylight.
According to Lehighton EMA and Lehighton Light & Power Department, Coal Street (between 2nd and 3rd Street) are without power. In addition, some homes on Center Alley, from Coal to Ochre, are also without power.
The American Red Cross is providing support to the 9 fire victims displaced by the fire. A temporary shelter was opened at the Recreation Center located at 243 South 8th Street. Due to no interest or occupancy, it was closed around 9 p.m. tonight.
Any families living in homes without power are asked to call the Tamaqua Salvation Army at 570-668-1234 if they need a warm place to sleep tonight.
