A Tamaqua woman and teenage passenger were injured during a single-vehicle accident today in Tamaqua. Emergency personnel were dispatched around 12:15 PM to the front yard of 518 East Broad Street for a vehicle accident with entrapment.
The vehicle was traveling east when it apparently failed to negotiate a turn at the 500 block of East Broad Street. It continued over a sidewalk, up a small embankment, and into two brick landscape columns in front of 518 East Broad Street.
Seeing smoke, Will Rodgers of Coaldale, who was driving behind the vehicle, helped the teenage girl out of the vehicle. Emergency personnel responded quickly and used hydraulic equipment to cut the door off the vehicle to free the woman.
The driver said she lost feeling in her feet and opted to crash into the yard rather than elsewhere.
Both the woman and teenager were transported via ambulance to St. Luke’s Hospital in Coaldale. The woman suffered a broken bone in one of her legs, while the girl endured minor injuries.
US209 traffic was backed up while Tamaqua Fire Police detoured smaller vehicles through the East End section of the borough.
Neighbors stated that today’s crash occurred at the same exact location as a motorcycle accident and vehicle crash over the past few years. They added that contractors had just completed repairs and landscaping work a number of months ago at the same location. The latest crash resulted in similar damage.
Responding were Tamaqua Rescue Squad, Tamaqua Police, East End Fire Company, American Hose Fire Company Tamaqua Ambulance, Lehighton Ambulance, and others.
Hope’s Towing removed the vehicle. Officials stated the vehicle was totaled.
